In June of 2016 FSES dispatched a sampling team to Mosier Oregon to sample Columbia river water and sediment as well as soil in response to a Union Pacific oil train derailment and fire. Three tank cars of Bakken crude oil were spilled and it is thought that approximately 20,000 gallons of oil remained after the subsequent fire. Chemicals from the oil were found in ground water samples and a sheen of oil was seen on the Columbia.
